March Hydrant Testing

The Berthoud Fire Protection District will be testing the hydrants outside of the town between March 1st and March 17th. Hydrants within the Town of Berthoud will be tested between March 10th and March 17th. Please be patient as we will be working diligently within this window to complete this project. You may be wondering why we test the hydrants?

1) Static, residual and pitot readings are necessary in order to determine the hydrants total available fire flow.

2) We need to have accurate data that tells us how much water is available from each hydrant in order to employ appropriate fire
suppression tactics.

3) We need to  have accurate data that tells us how much water is available from the grid in the event of a major fire that would require
multiple hydrants.  (Can the grid support multiple hydrants flowing at the same time?)

4) We need data that will allow us to determine if we a have weak hydrant or there is a mechanical problem with mains, valves or hydrants.

5) We need data that is useful to water agencies and engineers in planning upgrade needs, capacity for expansion, identification of weak distribution areas, fire flow calculations for fire suppression systems etc. This data also affects your ISO rating.

This round of hydrant testing will cause some unpleasant side effects due to the nature of this particular testing process. Because of the flushing that takes place, the sediment can become more apparent and produces something called "brown water" in your home water. Run your faucets for a short while, and it should clear up during this process.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mike Bruner at mbruner@berthoudfire.org or call him at the station at 970-532-2264. Thank you for being patient during this important testing time!

Controlled Slash Burn

Posted by admin on Wed Mar 03 2010, 04:50PM in Wildland

During the week of August 17th, 2009, members of the Berthoud Fire Protection District's Wildland Team mitigated a "Fuels Modificiation Project" in an Urban Interface area of the District. An Urban Interface area, or UI, is an area where structures and other human developments meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland areas. This intermingling causes fires to spread from structures to vegetation and vice versa with extreme ease.

Because one of the best ways to prevent this from happening is to modify the vegetation in highly dense areas, Berthoud Fire took it upon itself to thin out an area halfway up Cougar Run Lane, an area just south of Carter Lake, by cutting and removing dead trees and heavy canaopy overgrowth. Not only does this process reduce fire hazards, it also improves the health of the wooded area.

After this mitigation became a success, a large "slash pile" (debris/branches from the August vegtation thinning project) accumulated and was in need of being removed. Therefore, on the 1st and 2nd of this month, we took the opportunity to perform a controlled burn of this pile while there was still snow on the ground!
